Per NEC 2023: For dwelling units, receptacles supplied by single-phase branch circuits rated 125V to 250V with a maximum voltage to ground of 150V shall be provided with personnel ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) protection for the following locations:

· All receptacle circuits in bathrooms Bathrooms are high-humidity areas with elevated electric shock hazards. GFCI protection is mandatory for all receptacle circuits regardless of power rating, and this has long been a firm requirement.

· Receptacle circuits in garages and accessory buildings below grade All readily accessible receptacle circuits in garages, below-grade storage rooms and workshops require GFCI protection.

· All outdoor receptacle circuits All residential outdoor receptacles (50A or less) must have GFCI protection for new installations. Outdoor environments are prone to leakage, making this a key inspection item for residential wiring projects in North America.

· Receptacle circuits in basements and crawl spaces below grade GFCI protection is required for all receptacle circuits in finished basements, unfinished basements and underground crawl spaces. This requirement took effect starting with NEC 2020.

· All receptacle circuits in kitchens (Major update in NEC 2023) Older standards only mandated GFCI for countertop receptacles. NEC 2023 expands this rule: GFCI protection applies to every receptacle circuit within kitchens. This includes countertop outlets, refrigerator receptacles, dishwasher circuits, garbage disposals, microwaves and plug-in range receptacles, with no distinction based on proximity to sinks.

· Receptacle circuits within 1.8 meters (6 feet) of a sink Receptacles located within 6 feet of any sink edge require GFCI protection, regardless of room type. Examples include break rooms, laundry basins and bar sinks.

· Receptacle circuits in laundry rooms Laundry spaces have high humidity. GFCI protection is mandatory for circuits serving washing machines and spare receptacles in laundry rooms.

· Receptacle circuits within 6 feet of bathtubs or shower stalls Readily usable receptacles within 6 feet of bathtubs or shower enclosures fall under GFCI protection requirements.

· Receptacle circuits in boathouses GFCI protection is required for all receptacle circuits in boathouses adjacent to water.

GFCI protection can be implemented in two acceptable ways: 1.GFCI circuit breaker installed at the origin of the branch circuit; 2. GFCI wall receptacle mounted at the outlet location. Both methods are accepted during electrical inspections. GFCI receptacles are the most widely adopted solution in field installations.
